Why So Many Horses Stay Crooked Even After “Good” Straightness Training
— and why so many riders are left confused when the exercises designed to create straightness begin producing a horse who is cosmetically straighter, but also tenser, duller, more resistant, and less engaged.
Straightness is one of the most popular subjects in horse training, and probably one of the most misunderstood. Every day I am contacted by horse owners whose horses remain crooked despite good training, regular lessons, correct exercises, strengthening work, careful riding, and sincere effort. These are not people doing random things in the arena while hoping for a miracle. These are riders who are actively trying to help their horses become more balanced, more even, more connected, and more straight.
And yet the horse still drifts to the side on the straight lines. One rein still feels heavier. One shoulder still falls to the outside. One hind leg still does not step in the same way. And hindquarters still push to the side. One diagonal still disharmonies when the work becomes more demanding. The horse may improve for a moment, but then the same crookedness comes back like a very loyal but completely unwanted friend.
Even more interesting is that many horses become cosmetically straighter through training, but at the same time they become slower, less engaged, duller, heavier in the contact, or less willing to transition into a higher gait. The horse may look more organized from the outside, but the movement loses life. The body is placed better on the line, but the energy still does not travel well through the body, and the movement becomes emotionally associated with effort, which the horse tries to avoid by all means.
This is where we have to ask a much deeper question:
Did we actually create straightness, or did we only create a horse who is better at holding a corrected shape?
This is the eureka moment for many of my students when we talk and I explain them what is happening: Straightness is not only about where the horse’s body is placed. Straightness is about how force travels through the horse’s body. A horse can be placed on a straight line and still move through crooked force. A horse can have the neck in the middle and still push unevenly from behind. A horse can look more “controlled” and still be blocking the back, avoiding working with equal strength with one leg diagonal, loading one shoulder more, or moving through old muscular compensation patterns.
This is why straightness is not simply a shape or position problem. It is a movement system problem.

In my work, I do not look at the horse as a collection of separate body parts that must be corrected one by one or run through the “exercise machinery”. The muscles are doing the pushing, holding, stabilizing, carrying, correcting, compensating, and often also protecting. This means that any difference between the muscles on the left and right side can be reflected very clearly in the movement.
If one side is stronger, tighter, more dominant, less coordinated, more tired, or more protected, the horse will often move in a way that reveals this difference. The horse may push unevenly, drift, lean, shorten one side, become heavier on one rein, lose one diagonal, fall through one shoulder, or begin developing compensations that make the body more crooked over time.
From the biomechanics point of view, the problem is not only that the horse has two naturally different sides. Every living body organized around a spine has natural asymmetry. We are not dealing with a factory-made machine, and honestly, horses already have enough opinions without also needing perfectly identical left and right sides. The deeper problem is that if the horse uses mainly muscular effort to create movement, these muscular differences become part of the kinetic pattern of every stride.
This is one of the reasons why trying to create straightness only through strengthening both sides equally is so limited. If movement depends mainly on muscles, then the natural asymmetry of the muscles becomes the central problem. The rider may spend enormous time trying to make both sides equally strong, equally supple, equally coordinated, equally responsive, and equally available, but in reality this is almost impossible. Muscles are influenced by habit, nervous system patterns, tension, fatigue, hydration, oxygen supply, previous injuries, previous training, and old compensations.
This is why, in Anna’s Riding Method, which is my Riding System focused on transferring Tendon-Based-Movement fully onto the saddle work, we do not chase cosmetic symmetry. We are not trying to erase every natural difference between the left and right side of the horse’s body. We are looking for something much deeper: functional straightness created by relaxation, connection, and correct transmission of force through the body.
Functional straightness does not mean the horse has no asymmetries. It means the asymmetries no longer dominate the movement. It means the horse can transmit energy through the body without constantly falling into the same compensations. It means straightness comes from a better movement system, not from the rider constantly holding the horse together like a suitcase that refuses to close.
Tendon-Based Movement changes this situation in a very important way. In Tendon-Based Movement, the main moving forces do not come from muscles continuously contracting to push the body forward. Instead, the tendons and ligaments begin to store energy and release it, like springs. The muscles still work, of course. We are not removing the muscles from the horse, which would be both anatomically inconvenient and difficult to explain to the vet. But the role of the muscles changes.
Their job is no longer to create every part of the movement through constant effort. Their job is to activate briefly, support the tendon and ligament system, allow energy to be gathered, and then return to relaxation. This creates a completely different quality of movement. The horse no longer feels as if every stride has to be manufactured by effort. The body begins to recycle energy through elastic structures. The stride becomes more spring-like, more efficient, more connected, and more alive.
From the point of view of physics, Tendon-Based Movement allows the horse to use energy storage and release instead of producing every moment of movement through muscular contraction. The body loads, the elastic structures store energy, and that energy is released into the next phase of the stride. This is why the movement begins to feel more rhythmic, more elastic, more economical, and more self-carrying.
This is extremely important for straightness because tendons and ligaments do not fatigue in the same way muscles do, and they do not reflect muscular asymmetry in the same direct way. Muscles are very sensitive to tone, habit, fatigue, oxygen supply, and tension. Tendons and ligaments work more as elastic transmission structures. When the horse begins using Tendon-Based Movement more and more, the movement becomes naturally more even, more elastic, more efficient, and more straight.
The horse no longer depends so heavily on the uneven strength, tension, and endurance of the left and right muscles. Instead, the movement begins to travel through a more central, elastic system of energy storage and release. This is why Tendon-Based Movement does not simply make the horse look straighter. It changes the source of the movement.
In muscle-based movement, the horse’s straightness is strongly limited by the condition of the muscles. If the left side is more tired than the right, the movement changes. If one side is tighter, the movement changes. If one side has developed stronger compensations, the movement changes. The muscles constantly influence the line of movement because they are acting as the main engine.
This is why a horse may begin the work feeling relatively even, but become more crooked as the session continues. The more tired the muscular system becomes, the more difficult becomes the exercise and the more it relays on the muscular effort, the more clearly its asymmetries appear. Fatigue and difficulty both reveal the truth of the movement system. It shows where the force does not travel. It shows which diagonal is not truly available. It shows where the horse pushes instead of transmits, holds instead of releases, protects instead of opens, and compensates instead of connects.
This is also why some horses become slower, duller, or less willing to transition into a higher gait when straightness training is based mainly on correction. The rider may be trying to make the horse straighter, but the horse experiences more control, more interruption, more muscular holding, and less freedom in the kinetic chain. The visible shape becomes more organized, but the movement becomes less alive. The body may be straighter, but the energy is not flowing through the body.
In Tendon-Based Movement, the dependency on muscular pushing is reduced. The horse begins to move through a more elastic system of energy storage and release. The tendons collect energy when the body loads them, and then they release that energy into the next phase of movement. Because this mechanism is much more spring-like and much less dependent on continuous muscular effort, the movement becomes more consistent from stride to stride.
This is why Tendon-Based Movement creates a higher level of straightness. The horse is no longer trying to push forward mainly through muscles that are naturally different on the left and right side. The horse begins to move through structures that are more elastic, more mechanically stable, and more reliable as part of a whole-body movement system.
This does not mean that the horse becomes perfectly symmetrical. No living body organized around a spine becomes perfectly identical on both sides. But the asymmetries become less dominant in the movement because they are no longer the main source of propulsion. In muscle-based movement, asymmetry becomes the engine. In Tendon-Based Movement, asymmetry becomes background information. It is still there, but it no longer governs the whole body.
On top of the tendon system, Anna’s Riding Method places special importance on the ligaments going along the spine. These ligaments create one of the most powerful systems for collecting and releasing energy in the horse’s body. When the horse moves correctly, the spine and the ligaments connected with it can function like a long elastic system. Energy can be gathered, stored, transferred, and released through the body without the horse needing to rely on continuous muscular effort.
This is extremely important for straightness because the spinal ligament system is part of the horse’s central elastic structure. When this system begins to participate in movement, the horse no longer has to create movement separately through uneven muscular pushing on the left and right side. The energy begins to travel through the long ligament system, the back, the pelvis, the neck, and into the contact as one connected kinetic chain.
This is where straightness becomes much more intelligent than correction. The horse becomes straighter not because the rider has corrected every little asymmetry, but because the horse is moving through a system that is naturally more efficient and mechanically stable. The more the horse uses the spinal ligament system as the main propeller of movement, the less the horse depends on uneven muscular effort.
The horse is no longer only being placed into straightness from the outside. The horse begins to move from the inside through a more central, elastic, and self-organizing system.
This is also why relaxation is not a soft, emotional detail in ARM. Relaxation is a biomechanical necessity. Without relaxation, the muscles dominate the movement. With relaxation, the tendons and ligaments can begin to do more of the work. Relaxation is not the opposite of power. Relaxation is what allows real power to travel.
In muscle-based movement, muscles must work for long periods to create the forces needed to move the body. This can make them tired, tight, and increasingly uneven. When one side becomes tired sooner than the other, the horse begins to compensate. These compensations create more tension, more crookedness, and eventually a stronger habit of moving asymmetrically.
In Tendon-Based Movement, the muscles work in short activations followed by much longer periods of relaxation. The muscles activate briefly to support the tendon and ligament system, but then they release again. This means the muscles have time to recover within the movement itself. They remain fresher, softer, more hydrated, more oxygenated, and more available.
This is extremely important for circulation. Relaxed muscles allow blood to move through them more easily. Blood brings oxygen and nutrients and removes waste products. When muscles are constantly tense, circulation becomes restricted, and the muscles become tired much faster. When muscles repeatedly relax during movement, they remain better nourished and less likely to become overloaded.
This is why a horse moving in Tendon-Based Movement does not become tired in the same way. The horse is not exhausting one weaker side and then compensating with the other. The muscles are not being asked to create all the forces through constant effort. Because the muscles remain fresher and more relaxed, the horse is much less likely to develop compensations, tensions, heaviness, dullness, and crookedness during work.
Crookedness is not only a shape. Crookedness is a repeated force pattern. It is the body choosing the same path again and again because that path is familiar, easier, protected, or already trained into the nervous system. This is why the horse may improve during a lesson and then return to the same crookedness later. The shape was corrected, but the force pattern was not transformed.
Tendon-Based Movement changes the movement system itself. As the horse learns to move with more elastic energy and less muscular effort, straightness becomes more natural and more self-sustaining. The rider no longer needs to correct every small deviation because the horse’s own body mechanics become better organized.
This is why the riding style used in Anna’s Riding Method is so important. The rider follows the horse’s body, keeps the hands passive, uses the back actively, and avoids constant corrections that interrupt the natural flow of movement. Tendon-Based Movement can grow only when the horse is allowed to use the body without being blocked. When a rider constantly corrects the horse, pulls on the reins, changes the horse’s balance with the hands, or acts against the movement, the horse has to protect itself. The muscles become more active, the body becomes less elastic, and the horse returns to muscle-based movement.
ARM creates the opposite situation. The rider joins the horse’s movement and allows the horse to discover a more efficient way of moving. Passive yet feeling hands preserve the elastic connection. The rider’s active back guides the energy without blocking it. Correct turning creates bend without pulling the neck. Relaxation allows the muscles to release, so the tendon and ligament system can begin doing more of the work. Body-to-body connection allows the rider to influence the movement without breaking the movement.
When Tendon-Based Movement becomes stronger, straightness begins to develop in a very natural way. The horse no longer needs the rider to constantly fix the line because the movement itself becomes more organized. Forces travel more evenly through the body, the muscles remain more relaxed, and the spinal ligament system begins functioning as the main propeller. The back becomes more connected. The pelvis becomes more available. The neck stops acting as a balancing stick and becomes part of the whole kinetic chain. The contact becomes more elastic because energy can finally travel into it instead of being blocked, held, or absorbed by tension.
This is the next level of straightness. It is not straightness created by the rider holding the horse straight. It is straightness created by the horse’s own body mechanics becoming more efficient, elastic, relaxed, and connected.
This is why, in the entire OneHorseLife Training System, we do not fight crookedness directly. We remove the tensions and muscular dominance that create crookedness. We help the horse move through the long ligament system, the tendons, the back, the pelvis, the neck, and the contact in a more connected way. Then straightness becomes the result of the movement, not something imposed on top of the movement.
Straightness is not a correction. Straightness is a consequence. It is the consequence of relaxation, connection, the correct kinetic chain, the long ligament system, and Tendon-Based Movement. It is the consequence of the horse no longer having to survive movement through muscular effort, but being able to recycle energy through the elastic structures of the body.
This is why the horse can become more powerful and softer at the same time. More straight and less “holding himself together” to prevent rider’s another correction. More forward and less lazy. More connected and less guided step by step. More balanced and less managed.
The goal is not to dominate the body into a shape. The goal is to help the body remember how to move through its own intelligence. When we understand straightness from this perspective, we stop riding only the outside of the horse and we begin seeing the movement system from the inside.
The real meaning of straightness in OneHorseLife Training System is not a horse held straight, corrected every second, or made cosmetically symmetrical through control. It is a horse whose body has found a better way to transmit energy. A horse whose movement becomes so connected, so elastic, and so intelligently organized that straightness starts to appear as a natural result. And once you feel this, you cannot unfeel it, because then straightness is no longer something you chase.
It is something the horse begins to offer when the whole movement system finally makes sense.
