Conscious Relaxation Across the Spectrum of Movement for Horses

Optimal Performance Program™

Developed in 2015, Published in 2018 and taught since 2018 this GroundBreaking Program is the missing step for the complete integration of your horse’s health, performance, movement and wellbeing. It is the first and only program that teaches horses how to consciously release tension — before, within and after the performance — not just avoid it.

This course is now available in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, and Polish.

Turn Every Ride Into a Moment of Transformation

Whether you’re training for performance, supporting rehabilitation, or simply longing for deeper harmony with your horse — the Optimal Performance Program (OPP) helps you unlock your horse’s innate ability to release tension consciously and consistently.

This is not about distracting the horse from stress. This is about teaching them what to do with it.

Backed by equine biomechanics, nervous system science, and somatic learning principles, this program gives you a completely new way of looking at tension — not as a problem to fix, but as a door to progress.

The Science Behind the Method

Tension isn’t just behavioral — it’s neuromuscular, postural, digestive, and often… unconscious.

When a horse tenses up, the nervous system moves into sympathetic dominance: fight, flight, or freeze. Muscles harden, fascia tightens, movement vectors distort. The horse may still look calm — but underneath the surface, tension accumulates and blocks true performance, learning, and communication.

OPP works by re-educating the horse’s nervous system to recognize tension triggers and respond with conscious relaxation. With every technique, your horse learns:

  • To release instead of brace.

  • To soften rather than disconnect.

  • To self-regulate under pressure.

  • To build confidence through ease.

ou will literally feel the change — under your fingers, under your seat, in your reins.

What You’ll Learn: 8 Core Techniques

These techniques target different layers of tension and teach horses to release them across stillness and movement:

  • Basic Relaxation Technique – awakens body awareness and melts subconscious tension.

  • Stomach Relaxation Technique – addresses gut-brain tension, a key source of postural tightness.

  • Head and Poll Relaxation – frees the junction that most affects forward motion and self-carriage.

  • Heart Relaxation Technique – connects body softness with emotional calm and trust.

  • Movement Pattern Relaxation – retrains deeply conditioned responses into soft, fluid motion.

  • Relaxation in Gait Transitions – maintains softness through acceleration and deceleration.

  • Relaxation Under Distraction – teaches horses to prioritize inner calm regardless of stimuli.

  • Relaxation Under Load – builds strength and balance through softness, not resistance.

Each technique is rooted in somatic release, neuroplasticity, and biomechanical reset.

Who This Program Is For?

Performance Trainers (Dressage, Jumping, Eventing)

You want suppleness, self-carriage, and mental resilience on show day. OPP helps you develop elastic, balanced horses who perform from relaxation, not adrenaline.

Owners of Reactive or “Hot” Horses

Your horse is recovering from ulcers, musculoskeletalIf your horse spooks easily, bolts, or won’t settle, this program gives them tools to return to safety within themselves — not just obey commands. injury, or systemic inflammation. You need a soft, at-home method to improve movement and relaxation without stress or force. RTRT uses parasympathetic activation and muscular decongestion to support healing and reduce compensatory holding patterns.

“We added RTRT during rehab from tendon injury. The difference in posture and attitude is visible every day.”

Groundwork and Behavioral Trainers

For those seeking deeper transformation, not compliance. OPP gives you real markers for release — you’ll feel the difference in posture, eyes, and movement.

Mindful & Holistic Equestrians

The program teaches presence, connection, and shared emotional regulation. It’s a somatic language both you and your horse can speak — together.

Rehab & Rescue Specialists

Ideal for horses post-injury or trauma. Teaches self-trust and soft reconditioning, even before the horse is back under saddle.

Riders Seeking Calm and Harmony

When you carry tension, your horse mirrors it. This program helps both of you find the space between the moments, where ease replaces effort and partnership replaces control.

Why Nothing Else Worked — Until Now

You’ve tried groundwork, desensitization, massages, supplements, maybe even mindset coaching… But if tension stays in the tissues, no technique will hold for long.

The Optimal Performance Program is different because it goes to the source:

  • the subconscious muscle tone

  • the neuromuscular fear memory

  • the biomechanical holding patterns

…and helps the horse choose softness instead.

Built on Science, Guided by Love

This method draws on:

  • Physics of force distribution: Relaxation allows correct energy flow across joints and tendons.

  • Biomechanics of locomotion: Released bodies allow natural, optimal gait patterns.

  • Neurobiology of stress: Conscious relaxation activates the parasympathetic system.

  • Behavioral psychology: Replaces conditioned reaction with chosen response.

No gimmicks. No pressure. Just pure education for the horse’s body and mind.

Why Teaching Autoregulation is Crucial

A growing number of professionals ask: “Shouldn’t horses regulate themselves through the herd?”

This is a valid question — and one that shows deep care for horses’ natural instincts. But here is the truth:

In nature, regulation through the herd exists, but it is not always effective. Horses mirror tension just as much as they mirror calm. A tense herd spreads tension like wildfire.

In modern settings, most horses:

  • Are kept in human-controlled environments.

  • Are separated from true herd dynamics.

  • Face stressors (transport, competition, solitary stabling) for which no natural herd behavior can prepare them.

This is why conscious autoregulation matters.

Teaching a horse to find safety inside themselves — not just from others — is not unnatural. It’s liberating. It allows the horse to:

Remain soft and trusting even when alone.

Recover from stress faster, regardless of surroundings.

Avoid over-reliance on humans or herd members for emotional balance.

Stay clear-headed during work, travel, and medical recovery.

A self-regulating horse is not disconnected — they are sovereign. They are resilient. They are free to choose calmness, not just fall into it by accident.
This is one of the greatest gifts you can offer your horse in the 21st century.

A Method that Changed the Course of Equine Education

The Optimal Performance Program is not a variation of something that already existed. It is a pioneering method, created from scratch by Anna and Paweł Marciniak — born from the desire to show that horses can learn to relax consciously, not just reflexively or incidentally.

  • The first steps of this technique began in 2009.

  • It was introduced in live teachings and consultations from 2014.

  • In 2017, the first official publication appeared, marking the beginning of a new era in equine education — one where conscious muscular relaxation became a skill that could be taught, measured, and refined.

This is not relaxation that comes from desensitization or momentary relief after pressure.
This is true, felt, embodied relaxation — one that emerges from within the horse.

It is not a technique that merely lowers stress by contrast. It is a technique that liberates the horse from tension altogether.

How is the Optimal Performance Program different from Pressure-Release Systems?

Pressure-Release systems operate by inducing a temporary increase in stress through pressure (physical or emotional), and then offering release. The horse “relaxes” only because the contrast between stress and non-stress creates a sense of relative relief.

But this is not true relaxation — it’s a form of compensation. The body stays primed for tension because it has learned that calm only comes after discomfort.

In contrast, OPP teaches the horse to access relaxation without needing pressure as a prerequisite. The result is a horse that doesn’t just “come down” after stress — it stays soft, centered, and aware throughout. The nervous system no longer swings between survival and surrender. It learns how to be stable and calm — from the inside out.

How is the Optimal Performance Program different from Éthologique techniques?

Éthologique approaches emphasize observation and use of herd-based language, often focusing on timing, distance, and body orientation to shape behavior. While this honors the horse’s nature, it also tends to rely heavily on relational cues: “I move, you move; I pause, you pause.”

But these interactions often stay external — they shape the horse’s response, but rarely touch the internal muscle tone or movement patterns that drive physical tension.

OPP goes deeper. It does not just communicate “what to do,” it teaches the horse how to feel.

This program re-educates how the horse inhabits its own body, how it moves, how it breathes, and how it regulates tension through its own awareness. It teaches the horse a language that doesn’t depend on your position or herd structure — but lives inside the horse itself.

How is the Optimal Performance Program different from the Masterson Method?

The Masterson Method is a valuable form of bodywork focused on reading subtle responses to find and release tension. It works with the horse’s feedback, often through touch, and has helped many horses find temporary relief.
However, it is passive — the horse receives.
And it is reactive — the practitioner seeks to find what is already tense and soften it.In contrast, OPP is active and educational.

It empowers the horse to:

  • Detect tension internally, before it manifests visibly.

  • Choose a conscious motor pattern that allows for softness and release.

  • Use techniques in movement, in training, in transitions, and in everyday interactions.

Where Masterson soothes, OPP transforms.

The equestrian world is evolving. Welfare is no longer a marketing term — it’s a requirement. Riders, owners, and professionals are searching for real solutions, not just softer versions of old systems.

Why This Matters Now More Than Ever

kr.11397.85

The Optimal Performance Program represents a new standard:

  • Rooted in biology, biomechanics, and nervous system education.

  • Respecting the horse’s autonomy.

  • Creating results not by repetition, but by revelation.

And once you feel the change — when the horse begins to melt under your hand, soften under your seat, and move like water — you’ll understand: This isn’t just a course. It’s a new language.
