Many of you wrote to us asking questions on how we work with our horses. I’d like to show you our typical daily training session with our young 3yo horse.
We will be training at liberty, on the field by the woods.
The film is uncut and this horse’s been with us for nearly 1,5y now.
I do nothing special ;-) I just reinforce things I like.
I follow 5 very simple rules:
- I reinforce not only behaviours, but mainly decisions my horse makes.
- From time to time I ask for too much, just to see for how long my horse can concentrate and coordinate his body and mind.
- I always give up on my ideas, if my horse shows that he wants to do something else. This is how his brain shows me, that is tired (slots of short-term memory are too busy processing the exercise).
- We take many pauses and breaks.
- Â I’m smiling to my horse.
Before I start to ask for bendings and other more complicated aspects (like higher gait) of any exercise, I make sure my horse fully understands it at walk. I start with teaching him where he has to put his feet. Step by step.
